Australia’s first comprehensive index to track the performance of key sectors in our economy on gender diversity in the boardroom has been released to mark International Women's Day. The index covers female participation on 774 boards across seven sectors.

Women on Boards, will be in Wollongong on 11 & 12 March 2010 for a series of networking and professional development events. The focus is on increasing women’s opportunity and capacity to be on boards. The events are suited to both current and aspirant directors as well as women who may not be contemplating board roles right now, but who are ambitious and want to contribute at either a local, state or national level.

As 2009 drew to a close we reflected on some major achievements for Women on Boards. The 2nd Diversity on Boards Conference proved to a catalyst for action on gender on many fronts. Chief of these was the proposed changes to the ASX Corporate Governance Principles and Guidelines and initiatives by the AICD on diversity.

ASX200 companies should aim to achieve a minimum of 25 per cent female directors by 2012 or risk mandatory quotas. If the 106 companies without a woman director made the first move, we would be almost half way to achieiving the target of 242 additional positions. WOB has detailed five strategies companies may find useful as a starting point.

Women on Boards welcomes the announcement by the ASX Corporate Governance Council of a proposal to expand the Corporate Governance Principles and Recommendations to require each entity listed on the ASX to adopt and disclose a diversity policy that includes measurable objectives relating to gender.
